Convert a file¶
Need a GeoPackage instead of a Shapefile? GeoJSON instead of CSV? Convert changes the file format — and can change the coordinate system at the same time.
Tip
Just converting a file once? You don't need to save a Job.
Examples that work¶
These are common conversions GeoJibe is set up to do:
| From | To |
|---|---|
| Shapefile | GeoPackage |
| GeoJSON | Shapefile |
| CSV | GeoJSON |
| GeoPackage | GeoJSON |
The Convert list also includes other formats from GeoJibe's spatial runtime. For the full catalog, see Supported formats.
Before you start¶
Have the input file ready. For a Shapefile, zip the companion files together (.shp, .shx, .dbf, and .prj if you have it).
1. Add your data¶
Add Upload and choose the file, or import from a URL, S3, FeatureServer, PostGIS, SQL Server, MySQL / MariaDB, Oracle Spatial, DuckDB, Google BigQuery, GeoServer, or GeoNode.
Wait until inspect finishes. Convert uses the inspected layers.
If the file has more than one layer, select the layers you want. GeoPackage can keep several layers in one file. Shapefile cannot — multiple Shapefile layers are delivered as a ZIP.
2. Add Convert¶
Click Convert and open Properties.
- Choose Format. On the Canvas, pick a format such as GPKG.
- Optionally choose CRS. Leave Source CRS to keep the current coordinate system.
On the Classic wizard, Output format can also be Keep source format when you only want to change CRS or pass the file through.
3. Choose where it should go¶
For a one-off file, add Download.
To send the converted file somewhere else, choose PostGIS, SQL Server, MySQL / MariaDB, Oracle Spatial, DuckDB, S3, SFTP, GeoServer, or GeoNode instead.
4. Run¶
Click Run. If you chose Download, click Download when it finishes.
Optional: change CRS while converting¶
In Convert Properties, set CRS to a common system such as EPSG:4326 — WGS 84 or EPSG:3857 — Web Mercator, or enter a custom EPSG code.
See Change coordinate systems.
What you get¶
You get one output file for formats that can hold several layers, such as GeoPackage.
If the output format cannot hold several layers and you selected more than one, GeoJibe packages the results in a ZIP.
Having trouble?¶
- The Shapefile is incomplete
- This file format is not supported
- The archive contains more than one spatial dataset
