Google BigQuery

Connect to Google BigQuery so you can browse datasets and tables, write GoogleSQL, and fill Jasper reports from query results.

Goal

Create a working Google BigQuery connection in Connection Manager and use it as a report Data Source.

Prerequisites

  • A Google Cloud project with BigQuery enabled
  • A service-account JSON key with permission to run jobs and read the target datasets
  • Network access from your workstation to Google APIs

Steps

  1. Open Data → Connection Manager….
  2. Add a connection and choose Google BigQuery.
  3. Enter:
  4. Project ID
  5. Default Dataset (optional)
  6. Location (optional — e.g. US, EU, us-central1)
  7. Service Account JSON — browse to the key file
  8. Click Test to authenticate and verify the project is reachable.
  9. Save the connection.
  10. On the Data tab, select the connection. Browse Datasets → Tables / Views → Fields.
  11. Write a GoogleSQL SELECT (Standard SQL). Example:
SELECT
    state,
    COUNT(*) AS customers,
    SUM(sales) AS sales
FROM `my-project.sales.customers`
GROUP BY state
ORDER BY sales DESC
  1. Apply, preview rows (bytes processed are shown when available), place fields on the report, then Preview / compile as usual.

Notes

Note

Queries use GoogleSQL (Standard SQL). Legacy SQL is disabled.

Note

Report parameters ($P{name}) are bound through BigQuery’s parameterized query API — values are not concatenated into SQL.

Note

Service-account credentials are referenced by file path (and may be mirrored in the OS credential store). They are never written into JRXML.

Note

Field discovery uses BigQuery metadata / dry-run schema — Designer does not run SELECT * over entire tables just to learn columns.
