Expression Builder

The Expression Builder helps you create calculated values for Text Fields, conditions, and other expression-aware properties.

Goal

Build a valid expression using fields, parameters, and functions — without memorizing syntax.

Prerequisites

  • A report with fields and/or parameters
  • An expression-aware property open (for example a Text Field expression)

Steps

  1. Select a Text Field (or another property that supports expressions).
  2. Open the Expression Builder.
  3. Browse categories such as Text, Math, Date, GIS, Logic, and Report.
  4. Insert fields ($F{}), parameters ($P{}), and functions from the catalog.
  5. Use templates or favorites when available.
  6. Validate/test if the dialog offers a test action, then apply.

$F{name} Field from the dataset
$P{name} Parameter value
$V{name} Variable (when defined)

Tips

Tip

Prefer catalog functions over hand-typed proprietary helpers. The builder inserts Jasper/Java-compatible templates.
